High-integrity forest carbon

Forests in the service of the climate

GTZ develops high-integrity forest restoration projects, designed to the most demanding standards on the market.

Our Programs

Six areas of action for lasting impact

01

Risk Avoidance

  • Protection against forest fires
  • Fight against illegal logging
  • Prevention of unplanned deforestation
  • Continuous satellite monitoring
02

Carbon Markets

  • Design aligned with voluntary market requirements
  • CORSIA Phase 2 compatibility by 2027
  • Architecture compliant with international mechanisms
  • Recognised methodological robustness
03

Ecosystem Restoration

  • Active afforestation and reforestation
  • Revegetation of degraded areas
  • Watershed restoration
  • Protection of local biodiversity
04

For Communities

  • Schools and educational facilities
  • Creation of lasting local jobs
  • Training and deployment of forest rangers
  • Development of local infrastructure
05

Economic Development

  • Economic value brought to the host country
  • Structuring of sustainable local supply chains
  • Development of a forest-based entrepreneurial fabric
  • Contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
06

Regulatory Compliance

  • Supporting governments toward their NDC targets
  • Alignment with national climate policies
  • Contribution to Net Zero objectives
  • Anticipating carbon regulation (CBAM, taxonomies)
The mechanism

Forests absorb CO₂.
That CO₂ becomes a certified credit.

A carbon credit is a way of making visible and measurable what nature already does — and putting it in the service of the climate.

1Credit
= 1 tonne of CO₂ sequesteredmeasured · audited · certified
01

The forest sequesters

La forêt séquestre

Each tree absorbs atmospheric CO₂ and stores it in its biomass. Naturally, continuously, over decades.

Natural process
02

The impact is certified

L'impact est certifié

Satellites and field inventories measure the actual sequestration. An independent third-party auditor validates every tonne.

Gold Standard
03

The credit offsets

Le crédit compense

Companies buy these credits to offset their emissions. The funding flows back to the forest project.

Public registry

The goal: forests restored, a climate protected, territories strengthened.

Our approach

Three choices that define what we do

01

An international reach

We operate where others do not, on territories of high restoration potential and high climate vulnerability. Our scope is international, not limited to a single region.

02

Gold Standard, exclusively

We have chosen a single framework, the most demanding on the market. This methodological exclusivity shapes our work, from project design through to independent audit.

03

Selectivity over volume

Five exemplary projects are worth more than fifty mediocre ones. As a matter of principle, we turn down projects whose additionality, permanence or community impact is fragile. This discipline is what earns the trust of our partners.

Our Reference Framework

Credibility through certification

Gold Standard

Gold Standard for the Global Goals

The most demanding standard on the voluntary carbon market, created by WWF. It guarantees methodological rigour, full transparency and a measurable positive impact on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Why it matters

We work exclusively with Gold Standard because it is the only standard that guarantees both climate integrity and positive social impact. No compromise.

CORSIA · ICAO

Aviation Carbon Offsetting

The carbon offsetting mechanism for international aviation set up by ICAO. Our projects are structured to target compatibility with Phase 2 requirements, which begin in 2027.

Why it matters

Designing our projects to stay compatible with CORSIA Phase 2 reflects a high quality bar and ensures alignment with international aviation standards.

Article 6 · Paris Agreement

International Credit Transfers

The international framework enabling carbon credit transfers between States. Our projects rest on a legal architecture designed to accommodate the requirements of the international transfer mechanisms established under Article 6.

Why it matters

The Article 6 framework structures international credit transfers and prevents double counting. We design our projects to stay compatible with these requirements over the long term.

ICVCM · CCP Label

Core Carbon Principles

The Core Carbon Principles (CCP) set the minimum quality criteria for the carbon market. Our projects are designed to meet CCP criteria from the outset, ensuring their methodological integrity.

Why it matters

The CCP label has become a market benchmark for institutional buyers. It is a recognised mark of methodological integrity.

EUDR · European Union

EU Anti-Deforestation Regulation

The European regulation against imported deforestation imposes rigorous due diligence across supply chains. Our projects are designed for EUDR compliance from the start.

Why it matters

EUDR compliance is not a constraint — it is an advantage. It opens access to European buyers and guarantees the project's regulatory durability.

Audit · Accredited VVB

Independent Verification

Each project is designed to be audited by a Validation and Verification Body (VVB) accredited under Gold Standard, fully independent of our structure. Zero conflict of interest. Full transparency.

Why it matters

Independent third-party audit is the ultimate guarantee of a project's integrity. Without it, a carbon credit is just a promise. With it, it is a verifiable asset.
